Updates from Jamie

I checked in with technorati and noticed I hadn't blogged for 11 days. Well I have been blogging for a while as we have got www.cheeze.com/news up and running which I am really excited about. We have hooked up the feed stats through Feedburner which I am loving - one of the great things I love about it, apart from the fact it is free, is just the way it lays things out and the amount of knowledge it offers. Spending more time on here makes me increasingly think why do other feed stat companies even bother...

I have also been invited to blog at www.chinwag.com which is an honour and a challenge to keep the blog posts coming, but I will certainly endeavour to.

The Wordpress blog we run for Cheeze.com/news is also great, I just love the endless variety of options we can use to further enhance the posts and help disseminate the stories to Facebook, Twitter, Delicious et. al!

I also read with interest Jeremiah's discussion about Facebook being worth $100m which is frankly ridiculous.

So that's about it for the time being, oh and we launched a Facebook Fan page for DMG, the Digital Marketing Group which is another great way of demonstrating our knowledge and connecting with more people.

Theory of Cause and Effect Pt2.

I posted a while ago about my theory on cause and effect but didn't explain.

When I posted included brands like British Airways and Bravissimo. My aim was to see if by including these brand terms in my post, would I be picked up on Google Alerts (for the relevant term) - I was picked up for Jamie Riddell but not for the other terms.

So my next task is to understand what the criteria is for appearing in Alerts. I know with my alert for 'Pink Floyd' that the slightest mention of them sets of an alert, so why not the other brands?

I guess by adding 'Pink Floyd' in here we may see my post appear in Alerts. This needs more thought, but I'd welcome yours.

Oh Darling, what a balls up!

I usually stay out of politics, but today I had to take exception. As one of the 25 million potentially affected by the screw up, I was livid with the balls up and as a result the Government.

So they stood up and said 'sorry' and it should not have happened but it did and some tea boy has sent our details out into the wide blue yonder. There are a heap of things that I don't like about this, but here are my top five concerns:

1. The details of 25m people could be 'burnt onto a CD' as if it were a stack of MP3's - is that all we come down to?

2. There were no safeguards in place on the machine to say, 'er no, don't do that'

3. Darling hasn't resigned yet - come on - couple the Rock Fiasco with this and that's a pretty shit track record. If it's '3 strikes and your out' I don't want to see what no. 3 will be. I know its not his direct fault but bloody hell, the buck stops somewhere.

4. We farm out the delivery of sensitive data to a courier firm. If we do go ahead with ID cards, will that be handled by a courier firm? Has the Govt. not heard of the term 'sleeper'?

5. The papers adivse us to look at paying for credit monitoring services, at around £75 a year? Shouldn't we get those for free now?

Geez.

The SEO benefit of blog commentary.

I've just finished a new post on the SEO benefits of blog commentary over at Chinwag. In essence, if you post a comment on someone else's blog, and you include your own url, Google will pick this up as a link. So instead of spending your time chasing those unsolicited or reciprocal links, spending your time ready quality blogs and leaving quality comments.

A New Theory of Cause & Effect

I am working on a new theory that involves Google, Google Alerts, Facebook, British Airways, Pink Floyd, Bravissimo and Jamie Riddell. Once I have the findings I can share them with you.

Social Networking for the over 50'a

Saga announced today the launch of their own 'Facebook style' social network for the over 50's. I think this is a great move and is indicative of the continued effort Saga are putting into extending their '2.0' footprint and online relevance. Whilst I am usually critical of brands creating their own social networks (as it is hard job to convince social contributors to move away from their comfortable space) I think this one works because it is already backed by a strong sense of community and content production, which will ensure traffic and content are available from day one.

It will be interesting to see the takeup of this and how it will compare against the like of Facebook, as FB becomes 'one size fits all.'

How would you rebuild your city?

PSFK highlighted this great Wiki today - http://likemind.pbwiki.com/ - you can submit your ideas of how you would rebuild your city. Naturally there is a lot of thought towards greener transport and more open space. You are encouraged to submit your own thoughts but it is also great just to read what 'the average person' is thinking.

One Born Every Minute

Just to prove there is 'one born every minute' I have purchased a pixel on www.milliondollarpubes.com linking to this blog. I saw the article yesterday over on www.clickz.com which reported an estimated 50,000 visits to the site since it was launched. Whislt that figure may not be real (there is no reference to where the stat came from) it is certainly an interesting opportunity.

I bought a link on the original Million Dollar Homepage which bought some traffic and sparked a whole discussion on the role of 'Focused Curiosity Advertising' which was the subject of a post earlier this year.

I'm confident the whole 'background' story to the site is Baloney but it is an interesting opportunity to get a link and maybe some traffic. It won't be much but you have to admit, there is an element of intrigue as to who is advertising on there.

Time will tell if its 'hot or not' and I'll keep you up to date on the traffic or lack of...

NB - if you are thinking about buying a pixel the $200 price tag excludes tax, and the redirect page after purchase seems to be broken...

the new Nokia Internet Phone

Nokia are here promoting their new Internet 'phone, no I can't remember what it was called, N something or other. I had a go on it and it is just the same as my PDA from 4 years ago which I keep meaning to dust off, in this era of omnipresent wireless. It may take off in the States, though - the PDA didn't really take off in the UK unless you call a crackberry a PDA.

Joost built on Mozilla Firefox

So Joost is built on Mozilla Firefox which gives it great long term growth and tailoring when they open it up to the Mozilla development community.

Two reasons why we're back in the boom

We all know the big stories but its the little observations that are sometimes interesting... At Ad Tech this year, the Wifi Sponsor is an M&A company and there are two performances from Cirque du Solei tonight. Dotcom fever is back in business.

Dusting Off

Hey, I got 6 visits from Wikipedia this year, 142 from Google and 36 from Cheeze this year, not bad for no posting. I better dust this off and push it forward.
